My wife and I moved to Canberra in the Australian Capital Territory last October and almost from the beginning we have struggled to find places that even begin to stack up against our previous home: Washington, DC. We explored recommendations from friends, we read in guide books, surfed local websites, spoke with servers we knew, even signed up for special deals presumably from restaurants wanting to expand their numbers of regular diners, and unfortunately very little of this panned out or translated into efficiently finding good places to eat in Canberra.
With no http://www.yelp.com/ in Australia, we turned to the Australian equivalents, but unfortunately at http://www.eatability.com.au and http://yourrestaurants.com.au we quickly recognized these would not fully assist us or those like us due to their limited patronage by actual discerning, knowledgeable, critical, and unbiased foodies with similar expectations in terms of flavor, presentation, ambiance, fusion, value, creativity, service, and mystique. We're not saying there isn't good info there. We are happy contributors to eatability and would not be so if we thought it too sus -- we're using a review from it tonight to go to Sage, so we really hope it was good. Our conclusion was that these are works in progress as the food scene evolves in the Canberra locale, and as yet we could not find what were looking for in terms of disingenuous criticism. We felt they were not user-friendly, nor complete in painting the picture of the food scene in the ACT as we have experienced it. Given that the ratings and posts are all over the place, or how often the restaurants and experiences described therein seemed to completely clash with our experiences at the eateries in question, we decided to embark on this blog adventure.
We have set out to create a blog that is simple and designed to give the reader a quick view of our Top 10 Famous and Infamous restaurants in Canberra and nearby. Visitors to Canberra, or folks new to the ACT area can hopefully use it to quickly find places to seek out and to avoid, respectively. If they wanted to know why, or get other ideas, they could read further. Reviews would be judged against our standards which are derived from our culinary jaunts in DC and North America at large, as well as a trip to Italy.
We are working on developing a rating algorithm system that seeks to rate/order/organize restaurants based on what they profess to be, their price, and location.
We will begin the explanations of the restaurants soon as well.
We want to get your ideas, and input as well...maybe some guest raters. We will add contact info soon.
